Pocket Kisses

by Willa Perlman
illustrated by Jill McDonald

Pocket Kisses is the perfect book for introducing the concept that if Mommy has to go away for a little while, her love doesn't leave with her. She leaves behind special kisses for her son or daughter to hold in their pockets and take out to use whenever a kiss from Mommy will make them feel better. "When Mommy leaves she always knows to give me kisses from head to toe. Kisses to save and use all day, whenever I need one and Mommy's away." Each page depicts a scene related to the special kiss that Mommy leaves behind – a boo-boo kiss, snack-time kiss, bedtime kiss, and more. Each is revealed beneath a sturdy life-the-flap. There is also a fabric pocket on the front cover with a special keepsake "I love you" kiss that kids can punch out and put in their own pocket to remind them that Mommy's love is with them always.

The concept of a "pocket kiss" is akin to what psychologists refer to as a "transitional object," something that is an important part of every child's normal development. As they become toddlers, these transitional objects become even more important because children begin experiencing their first extended separations from Mommy. The author came up with the idea for Pocket kisses within this context. Read more about it in "About Pocket Kisses."
